President Donald Trump complained Monday afternoon that he took "a little heat" for ordering a military parade to be held on his birthday.
The president was asked about the June 14 parade during a White House event.
"You've got a big, beautiful parade coming up on Saturday," Brian Glenn of Real America's Voice said. "What's your biggest expectations for that?"
"I think it's an important moment for this country," Trump replied. "We're the only one that wasn't celebrating [World War II], and we're the one that won the war."
"I said to myself, you know, isn't that crazy? And I think it's time for us to celebrate a little bit," he continued. "And I sort of have to laugh at these people, well, you know, you're going to spend a lot of money. A lot of that money is being paid for by me and people that make donations."
Trump said the parade would be a "great expenditure" even if the military had to pay for it all.
"It's really a celebration of the Army," he explained. "And it's not my birthday, it is my birthday, but I'm not celebrating my birthday."
"I'm celebrating Flag Day. It happens to be the same day, so I take a little heat," the president added. "But Flag Day is the appropriate date, and we're celebrating 250 years of the Army, a great service."
