MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle on Tuesday brought on two veteran reporters who explained how President Donald Trump damaged America's alliance with Japan during his trip to East Asia this week -- and even created more division within his own administration.
Ruhle started off the segment by showing clips of Trump brushing off recent missile launches conducted by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, while also dismissing the concerns of his own national security officials about what the launches mean.
Washington Post White House bureau chief Philip Rucker and Politico senior correspondent Anna Palmer then came on to break down the reactions to Trump's statements, which fly in the face of intelligence assessments by both the United States and its allies.
"He took the word of a murderous dictator in North Korea over the assessment of his own national security experts," Rucker said.
Palmer then said that Trump was willing to embarrass Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in his own country in pursuit of a nuclear weapons deal with Kim that so far has "not gone anywhere." She then explained that there were "concerns" about Trump's actions on the trip, which was supposed to reaffirm America and Japan's alliance.
Rucker chimed back in to say that Trump has regularly gone beyond wanting to cut a deal with Kim and has seemed to show a preference for dealing with him over dealing with traditional American allies.
"Trump continues to praise him!" he said. "Over the weekend he called him a very smart man, he talked about the beautiful waterfront property that North Korea has."
