Trump busted by NYT reporter for lying about James Clapper to push bogus 'spygate' claims

President Donald Trump keeps misquoting the former director of national intelligence to push his bogus "spygate" narrative -- and a New York Times reporter called him out for lying.

James Clapper said Tuesday on ABC's "The View" that Trump should be "happy" the FBI was investigating alleged Russian spies infiltrating his campaign, and the former intelligence chief used the president's "spy" phrasing.

“They were spying on — a term I don't particularly like — but on what the Russians were doing,” Clapper told "The View."

Trump has repeatedly pushed Clapper's quotes to justify his made-up claims about campaign spies, and he did it again Thursday morning in a tweet.

"Clapper has now admitted that there was Spying in my campaign," Trump tweeted. "Large dollars were paid to the Spy, far beyond normal. Starting to look like one of the biggest political scandals in U.S. history. SPYGATE - a terrible thing!"

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman swiftly corrected the president, saying, "Clapper didn’t say this or anything approximating it."

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) also called out the president for lying about the FBI investigation of his campaign.
