Trump campaign chairman Manafort sentenced to 47 months in prison for fraud: report

Paul Manafort, who served as President Donald Trump's campaign chairman in 2016, has been sentenced to only 47 months in prison for committing fraud, reports MSNBC.

This sentencing is the end result of one of two trials Manafort, 69, is undergoing.

Manafort was accused of defrauding banks and the government while failing to pay taxes on millions of dollars in income he earned from overseas consulting.

The charges in this case were an offshoot of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Prosecutors had asked federal Judge T.S. Ellis for between between 19 and 25 years in prison, writing in a filing: "The defendant blames everyone from the special counsel's office to his Ukrainian clients for his own criminal choices."

Manafort gave a short statement to the court, where he did not apologize, MSNBC's Ken Dilanian reported.
