Trump campaign hires disgraced ex-Christie aide who was fired over role in 'Bridgegate' scandal

Donald Trump says he only hires the best people -- and apparently one of those people is Chris Christie's disgraced former campaign manager.

NBC News's Bradd Jaffy reports that sources are telling NBC that the Trump campaign is hiring GOP operative Bill Stepien as a National Field Director.

Stepien is best known for being New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's campaign manager who was fired in 2014 for his role in shutting down lanes on the George Washington Bridge in retaliation against the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee for not endorsing his boss's 2013 reelection bid.

Christie insisted in 2013 that Stepien had no knowledge of the lane closings, although recently revealed text messages between Christie aides show that Christie knew he was lying about Stepien's lack of involvement.

In reality, emails surfaced in 2014 that showed Stepien was well aware of the scheme to shut down the bridge lanes, and he even referred to Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich as an “idiot.”
