President Donald Trump is about to face a hard reality as he rushes helter-skelter into an expanding trade war with Canada.
According to a report from Politico, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has unified his country behind a strong stance against the American president, while Trump is simultaneously alienating voters and members of his own party who oppose the trade confrontation.
Public sentiment in the U.S. does not match the unified resolve seen north of the border. Americans have grown weary of tariff conflicts, while Canadians have expressed months of frustration over Trump's rhetoric targeting their nation.
That means Trump is "not factoring in one key U.S. disadvantage," Politico maintained.
While it remains unclear how long Canada can sustain support for its small and medium-sized businesses during a prolonged tariff battle, polling consistently shows Canadians across the political spectrum willing to absorb economic costs to resist U.S. pressure.
As Politico is reporting, "The opposite is true in the U.S., where even many in the president’s own party oppose Trump’s trade agenda — particularly his tariffs on Canada. And unlike Carney, the president faces a voter referendum in November, in the form of midterm elections."
As both nations dig in for a sustained conflict, the winner will likely be determined by who can better manage the fallout: Canada's "economic pain" or Washington's "political pain."
"The U.S. has more to lose given November's midterm elections, where the economy and tariffs are already concerns for voters," a former Trade Representative official who spoke on condition of anonymity told Politico. "If this escalates, members of Congress will face the political heat."
American voters, "increasingly hostile toward tariffs," are far more likely to react negatively to rising costs and economic disruption than their Canadian counterparts.
As evidence that Trump has one hand tied behind him, December polling by Politico showed only one-third of voters believe Trump's tariffs will ultimately help the U.S. economy. A June survey by The New York Times and Siena found 54 percent of likely voters in competitive battleground states oppose the tariffs, with opposition reaching 59 percent in Maine, a state with a closely watched Senate contest.
