President Donald Trump ordered his chief of staff to grant his son-in-law Jared Kushner top-secret security clearance last year in spite of intelligence officials' warnings.
The New York Times reported that the decision in May 2018 concerned then-Chief of Staff John Kelly so much, he "wrote a contemporaneous internal memo about how he had been 'ordered' to give Mr. Kushner the top-secret clearance."
The report noted that then-White House counsel Don McGahn also wrote a memo about security concerns regarding Kushner — including those raised by the CIA. The memo also included a recommendation McGahn received that the president's son-in-law not be granted the clearance.
Trump claimed in a January interview with the Times that he had no role in Kushner's clearance.
