If Donald Trump won’t give his followers a break from his wrathful ranting on Christmas Day, imagine how relentless his campaign year will be.
This is the terrifying thought experiment posed by CNN senior reporter Steven Collinson, who warned Trump’s yuletide “rot in hell” remark — made when other world leaders pleaded for peace — does not bode well for 2024 when he is likely to face off against President Joe Biden.
“The ex-president unleashed an online torrent of fury and bitterness…previewing the discord and personal obsessions he will inflict on the nation in a pivotal election year in 2024,” writes Collinson, who adds that the rants "hint at a furious state of mind and extreme denialism."
“These [tirades] are likely to raise new concerns about his temperament and suitability to serve again as commander-in-chief and are a dark omen as to what another Trump term could bring.”
The CNN reporter goes on to say that Trump's strategy seems to be getting his voters as furious as possible heading into election year, as the angrier the MAGA base remains, the less vulnerable they are to persuasion from former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley or Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that there are other conservative candidates to consider.
As proof, Collinson points to Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, both of whom have criticized Trump and seen their poll numbers flounder.
Collinson fears Trump will only continue to stoke the fire of his followers rage in hopes they’ll take their anger to the polls on Nov. 5.
“The fact that so many voters appear ready to embrace Trump again is a commentary on America’s political state heading into a new election,” Collinson writes.
“Given his behavior [it] seems likely to leave the country, regardless of the outcome, still locked in a cycle of political anger and dislocation.”
