Conservative George Conway shows how Supreme Court’s ruling is 'not really good for Trump'

Many legal experts believe the Supreme Court's decision to review former President Donald Trump's presidential immunity claim in the federal election conspiracy case has likely dashed hopes of special counsel Jack Smith trying the charges before the November presidential election.

But not so fast, argued conservative lawyer George Conway on X Friday — this whole thing may actually put Trump in a worse legal and political position than he was before.

"I wouldn’t say *everyone* is wrong," said Conway. "It’s just that, while the odds the federal Jan. 6 case will be tried 𝙩𝙤 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙩 before the election have diminished, the odds that the trial will be going on 𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙊𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙗𝙚𝙧 have skyrocketed."

If that ends up being the situation, Conway concluded, "That’s not really good for Trump."

Conway isn't the only analyst who has considered this possibility. Michael Tomasky, writing for The New Republic, has made a similar argument. "If Trump is literally sitting in a courtroom on Election Day — or even if he’s not sitting there but, say, Cassidy Hutchinson is on the stand describing that steering wheel incident, or Mark Meadows is on the stand squirming and sweating — the election is about him, the insurrection, the future of democracy," he wrote. "Your typical swing voter in Oakland County, Michigan, is going to be walking into the voting booth thinking about that, not Biden’s age or gait."

All of this is going on as Smith also tries to hammer out a trial date for the other case against Trump he is prosecuting, involving Espionage Act offenses for storing highly classified national defense information at Mar-a-Lago. He has proposed a July trial date, while Trump's team wants it to be in August at the very earliest.
