Anyone who loans Trump bond money will have to 'fight like hell' to get repaid: biographer

Trump has admitted it is all but impossible for him to obtain the $464 million bond necessary while he appeals the civil fraud judgment against him, opening up the possibility that New York Attorney General Letitia James could begin seizing his assets. But notably, even Fox News commentators can't help but notice that no billionaire benefactors are leaping to help the former president.
On MSNBC Wednesday evening, anchor Joy Reid discussed the issue with award-winning Trump biographer David Cay Johnston, playing a clip from Fox in which conservative analyst Charles Gasparino said, "Generally Donald doesn't have a great record of paying back banks over the years. And Donald Trump — so, you know, you can sort of surmise from that what you will."
Johnston, who has known the former president for over 30 years, couldn't agree more forcefully.

"Anybody who loans money to Donald will have to fight like hell to get paid back," he told Reid.
"And one of the aspects of this, Joy, I think is very important, is the framers of our Constitution, they thought very carefully about corrupting the presidency," he said. "So we have the Emoluments Clauses. Neither the state governments nor foreign governments under those clauses — which, of course, Donald paid no attention to — can put money in a president's pocket. But it's never occurred to them ... oh, you might have a foreign government with leverage over the president because he's in debt to him."
And the fact of the matter, Johnston added, is that "that's exactly what we're faced with, is Donald being beholden to MBS or Orbán or one of Putin's criminal gang."
