Trump claims criminal cases 'must be immediately halted' under nonexistent DOJ rules
February 26, 2024
Donald Trump on Monday falsely claimed that federal regulations prohibited him from being prosecuted because he's running for president.
The former president has been indicted four times on 91 counts, but he has repeatedly stated those cases were brought to prevent him from winning another term in the White House.
"The Very Strict Rules and Regulations of the Department of Injustice STATE CLEARLY that you can’t prosecute a Political Opponent, or anyone, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS/HER CAMPAIGN," Trump posted Monday morning on Truth Social. "Why didn’t they bring these FAKE Charges THREE YEARS AGO? That would have solved all of their problems."

In fact, no such "very strict rule" exists, though DOJ guidelines have been traditionally to not announce indictments of candidates with three months or fewer before an election.
That said, Trump was indicted in 2023, long before any primary votes were cast.
Trump, who has claimed broad presidential immunity for himself, has repeatedly threatened to prosecute his own political rivals if re-elected, and he insists that's the only reason he's been charged with crimes.
"The answer is that they AIMED for the various trials to come up during my campaign for President, 2024!" Trump posted. "This includes DOJ subservient “subsidiaries” like local D.A. & A.G. Offices. In other words, all of these FAKE POLITICAL PROSECUTIONS (PERSECUTIONS!) OF CROOKED JOE BIDEN’S POLITICAL OPPONENT MUST BE IMMEDIATELY HALTED!"
