President Donald Trump fumed over the crowd former President Barack Obama drew in Michigan on Saturday, complaining at a Georgia rally that the media never gives his own crowds their due.
Obama campaigned with Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson at a Detroit rally earlier in the day, the first day of in-person early voting in the state.
“Now he’s making a speech for Mohamed, today, in a massive crowd! A massive crowd has shown up? Where are they? They never talk about my crowd,” Trump said, using a name he has repeatedly applied to El-Sayed, whose middle name is Mohamed.
Trump then dredged up an old grievance about Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). He claimed the progressive icon drew “like 900 to 1,000 people” while he pulled 35,000 to 40,000, yet the press still gushed over Sanders.
“They’d say Bernie Sanders is speaking to massive crowds — they weren’t bad, but they were a tiny fraction,” Trump said.
Sanders’ crowds have been anything but tiny. His “Fighting Oligarchy” tour with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) drew an estimated 36,000 people to a Los Angeles rally in April 2025, after drawing more than 34,000 in Denver weeks earlier.
