A Republican lawmaker's claims about President Donald Trump's crypto investments backfired on Tuesday when the internet fact-checked her comments.
Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) defended Trump on Fox News and argued that the president had conducted his digital currency business before returning to the White House for his second term, despite reports that Trump has raked in more than $1 billion in crypto earnings since his first year in office.
"The president made his money on digital assets before he took the oath of office, so we have to make sure that people, when they are private citizens, can retain their rights to make money and use their intellectual prowess to make money in this country," Lummis said. "That's not wrong. In fact, that's kind of the great American capitalist premise."
But political commentators pointed out why Lummis' comments were inaccurate.
"Trump’s financial disclosures show he took in more than $1.4 billion in income from crypto, digital tokens and related partnerships in 2025. Wasn’t he president for all but 20 days of that year? Tell me against how much he’s sacrificed to 'serve.' The most transparently corrupt president in history, by far," political commentator Mike Bates wrote on X.
"Sen. Cynthia Lummis defends Trump grifting billions of dollars on crypto schemes while in office with blatant lies," journalist Aaron Rupar wrote on X.
"They all think you're stupid, they really do. They all probably have removed mirrors in their houses so they don't have to look at themselves," liberal political commentator Rodger Williams wrote on X.
"This is, of course, yet another lie to protect Trump and his deep corruption," political candidate Fred Wellman wrote on X.
"An obvious, easily provable lie. Republican in Congress exist to cover up Trump's corruption," Ron Filipkowski, attorney and the editor-in-chief for MeidasTouch, wrote on X.
