Questions raised about what a second debate could reveal about Trump's 'cognitive fatigue'

If Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris take part in a second presidential debate, it could reveal more about the former president's "mental acuity" and "cognitive fatigue," a MSNBC analyst said Saturday.

Alexi McCammond, who also serves as an opinion editor focusing on the 2024 election for the Washington Post, appeared on MSNBC over the weekend to discuss Harris potentially debating Trump once again. After the first debate, Trump promised there wouldn't be another, but later waffled and suggested he might consider debating again.

The host asked McCammond exactly why Harris would consider debating Trump again, after most say she won the first face-off.

"Why does the campaign want to debate Trump again?" the host asked. "Are they that confident that they could shellac him a second time or something?"

"They of course have room to grow with other voters who either weren't checked into the first debate or still might be on the fence, who want to hear a more substantive policy debate on certain issues," McCammond replied. "I do not think gun control was mentioned or asked about in a really deep way at the debate. That is one issue that comes to mind that voters might want to hear more about from Kamala Harris and Donald Trump."

She added that a second debate would give Harris "another chance to create and show voters the contrast between her and Donald Trump and what their presidencies would look like, what they look like as human beings, and how erratic Donald Trump is."

"Lastly," she added, "a second debate would give voters the opportunity to really assess, I would argue, Donald Trump's mental acuity and whether and how he has, we can say at the very least, cognitive fatigue."
