Trump demands New York Times reporter thank him -- but he refuses: 'I think I'll stop shy of that'

President Donald Trump has a hate-love relationship with The New York Times. During Trump's Wednesday press conference he repeatedly referred to The Times as "fake news."

Trump said that the paper would be failing without him. "We're kind of thriving, not failing these days," a reporter said after Trump called on him.

Trump then said it was because of him that The Times is succeeding.

"You're doing very well. Say thank you, Mr. Trump," Trump told the reporter.

"I think I'll stop short of that," the reporter responded.

Earlier in the press conference, Trump recalled a moment when the paper published a "fake news" story about him being accused of sexually assault.

"They made false statements about me. Knowing they were false. I never met them. I never met these people. What did they do? They took money in order to say bad things. I’ve had stories written in The New York Times front page, about four women," Trump said.

He continued, "That’s why people know that a lot of the news is fake. And a lot of the people sitting here are fake."
