Reacting to a desperate early morning plea from Donald Trump this week in which he urged Republican Party lawmakers to step in and make his legal problems go away, one political analyst stuck a knife in his hopes.
Early Wednesday, Trump ranted on Truth Social about his latest trial, writing in part that it, "Is a hit job on a Political Opponent the likes of which the USA has never seen before. For the Good of our Country, it must be stopped. The Crooked Joe Biden Witch Hunts have to be ended. REPUBLICANS IN WASHINGTON MUST TAKE ACTION!"
According to MSNBC analyst Steve Benen, Trump's demand for Republicans to intercede on his part is nothing new and has been a constant refrain for months, and that the former president is wasting his time.

In his column for MSNBC, he wrote, "He’s still at it, demanding that GOP lawmakers 'take action' on his behalf. Trump has never gotten around to explaining what kind of 'action' he expects to see, and that’s probably because Congress has no real options: Members have no control over who is or isn’t indicted, and lawmakers can’t simply choose to insert themselves in active criminal investigations."
Benen added that the only thing Trump-sympathizing GOP lawmakers could do would be to try and defund the investigations, but that is a non-starter.
Taking a broader view, he added, "Trump appears to believe he’ll be absolved of his legal troubles if he can simply beg the right person to make the cases disappear. As his defense attorneys have probably tried to explain to him, that’s not how any of this works."
