Joe DiGenova, a Trump loyalist who abruptly resigned from his post in the Department of Justice on Thursday, spoke out about the "ethical problem" that led to his departure in a brief interview with the New York Post.
DiGenova previously led the DOJ's "grand conspiracy" case targeting individuals such as former CIA Director John Brennan for investigating President Donald Trump over his ties to the Russian government. His sudden departure set off shockwaves within Trump circles, according to reports.
Josh Christenson, The Post's D.C. bureau chief, posted on X that he spoke with DiGenova by phone after his departure, and what he said left some analysts' jaws on the floor.
“If you want indictments where there’s no evidence, you have an ethical problem,” DiGenova told Christenson.
The comments allude to other Trump prosecutors who were forced out of their positions because they did not bring indictments against Trump's foes fast enough. In 2025, Trump removed prosecutor Erik Siebert over his reluctance to bring charges against former FBI Director James Comey. Seibert was later replaced by Lindsey Halligan, whom a judge removed after ruling her appointment illegal.
DiGenova's comments shocked some analysts.
