Trump is wondering if those who are leaking information about him from the DOJ will be investigated or prosecuted.
CNN released news of a recording on Wednesday that revealed Donald Trump was potentially taped bragging he had a classified report at his office in Bedminster, New Jersey, and he knew he couldn't show them to other people.
Within an hour of the report breaking and spreading across cable news, Trump attacked former U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins, who resigned on Tuesday after she was found to have leaked information to a friend running for office.
"Massachusetts’ top federal prosecutor leaked sensitive information from the Justice Department in an effort to help a friend win an election, and hurt the opponent," Trump said. The prosecutor just resigned. Big ramifications. BUT WAIT, all of the Democrat 'Persecutors' that are trying to Interfere (sic) with the 2024 Presidential Election are leaking constantly, and illegally, about me. Will they be resigning, and will there be an investigation into their leaking? There should be!"
The comments come after Trump's campaign accused the Justice Department of leaking the tape.
"Leaks from radical partisans behind this political persecution are designed to inflame tensions and continue the media’s harassment of President Trump and his supporters," the campaign said in a statement. "It’s just more proof that when it comes to President Trump, there are absolutely no depths to which they will not sink as they pursue their witch hunts. The DOJ’s continued interference in the presidential election is shameful and this meritless investigation should cease wasting the American taxpayer’s money on Democrat political objectives."
It's unclear if the tape came from the Justice Department. It was recorded by biographers that worked with Mark Meadows on his autobiography. They met Trump in 2021 at Bedminster to talk about various points in the administration and ask questions about Meadows.
Trump appears to be linking the two together. A Massachusetts prosecutor resigned for leaking and information, and information about him was being leaked by the DOJ. The Massachusetts prosecutor didn't resign due to the new information about Trump.
Trump didn't deny it was his voice on the tape, nor did he deny he knew he broke the law by having the documents. In the past, he claimed it was legal for him to take the documents because they were "mine." The recording appears to show he knew the opposite to be true.
