President Donald Trump lost a "staggering" measure of support on one of his greatest strengths with voters just a year into his second term, according to a new analysis.
The 79-year-old president boasted in a new interview that he's very proud of the economy right now, but CNN's Harry Enten found Americans don't seem to share his rosy assessment — and blame him for the problems they face.
"Staggering," Enten said. "You know, theeconomy used to be the windbeneath Donald Trump'spresidency wings, and now it'shis Titanic, because what are wetalking about here? Well, let'sjust take a look here. Trump'seconomic net approval one yearin term one – hey, yeah, plusside of the ledger, plus-eightpoints. It was his best issue, arguably, but now it's one ofhis worst. Look at that. Way, way down in the basement, 18points below water. What isthat? A 26-point switcheroo in thewrong direction.
"This is thetype of number that Democraticmidterm dreams are made of, and Republican nightmares are also made of."
Voters blame the president and his policies for what they believe to be a drooping economy, he said.
"It isbecause folks believe, thevoters believe it's the Trumpadministration's fault," Enten said. 'Take alook here, okay, the Trump adminhas made the economy worse orbetter. You go back to Januaryof 2018, term number one, theplurality winner there wasbetter at 40 percent, just 22 percent saidworse. Look at this side of thescreen, the exact oppositestory. What a switcheroo, mygoodness gracious – 52 percent, 52 percent of Americans say the Trump admin, their policies have made theeconomy worse, andlook at that. Just 28 percent saybetter. Even among the GOP, just57 percent say they make it better. Whenyou're only getting 57 percent of the Republican base to agree withthe positive position for Donald Trump, you know, you are in somemassive trouble, which the Trumpadministration and Trump inparticular are on the economy."
Trump's approval has fallen even worse among independents, Enten said.
"This wasa number that absolutely blew mymind," Enten said. "Oh, my goodness gracious.Trump's economic net approvalone year in among independentsin term one, he was 10 pointsabove water. Look at where he istoday. Whoa, 43 points below. That's a 53-point switcheroo. You can't win elections when, onthe number one issue, you are 43points below water amongindependents. This is justabsolutely atrocious."
