In a jaw-dropping moment at the House Republican retreat, President Donald Trump floated a shocking idea experts have warned about for months: ditching the 2026 midterms altogether.
Speaking before Republican lawmakers at the Kennedy Center on the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol, Trump griped about facing Democrats at all, The Daily Beast reported. He then casually suggested the nuclear option.
“I won’t say cancel the election, they should cancel the election because the fake news will say ‘he wants the elections canceled. He’s a dictator.’ They always call me a dictator,” a grinning Trump said.
The 79-year-old lamented over the midterm curse, complaining that winning the presidency leads to electoral doom.
“But even if it’s successful, they don’t win. I don’t know what it is. There’s something psychological, like you vote against,” Trump said.
“But they say that when you win he presidency, you lose the midterm,” he added.
Trump then informed Republicans he blessed them with a "roadmap to victory" and ordered them to "own" healthcare by giving money to people rather than insurers.
He concluded with a plea to his party.
“You gotta win the midterms,” Trump said. “Because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be, I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached.”
