CNN political commentator Charles Blow flipped a conservative panelist's guilt-by-association attack back on Donald Trump during a heated Monday night clash, invoking Jeffrey Epstein and Trump's affinity for authoritarian leaders in a comeback that quickly ricocheted across social media.
The clash unfolded on "NewsNight" with host Abby Phillip, where Blow and National Review columnist Caroline Downey are frequent sparring partners. Downey was pressing the argument that Democratic candidates campaigning alongside progressive streamer Hasan Piker should be judged by that association.
"They aren't disavowing Hasan Piker," Downey said.
Blow asked whether her argument was "guilt by association," and Downey didn't back down.
"You're known by the company you keep," she replied, as the panel shouted over each other.
Blow hit back with a searing argument.
"The company Donald Trump keeps is dictators who are around the [world], it is Jeffrey Epstein, it is crooks and criminals, it is Nick Fuentes having lunch with him," he began. "So for you guys to have the gall to talk to anybody about guilt by association?"
The Piker debate has consumed cable news for weeks. The Twitch streamer has campaigned with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Pennsylvania Rep. Summer Lee, and Republicans have hammered Democrats for not distancing themselves from Piker's past remarks, including his claim that America "deserved" 9/11, as Fox News reported.
Blow's retort landed against a backdrop of fresh Epstein disclosures. In September 2025, the House Oversight Committee released a lewd birthday letter to Epstein bearing Trump's name, part of a 2003 album compiled for the late sex offender's 50th. Trump has denied writing it and sued The Wall Street Journal over its reporting.
In November 2025, House Democrats released a trove of Epstein emails that mentioned Trump by name multiple times, and the Justice Department has released millions of files tied to Epstein's network over the past year, according to CNN.
Blow and Downey have tangled before. In June, the two clashed on air over Trump's Iran deal, with Blow demanding Downey "get your story straight."
