Public interest in the Jeffrey Epstein case has exploded since the last document drop by the Department of Justice, and new data shows President Donald Trump's ties to the late sex offender are now "more relevant than ever."
The DOJ released millions more documents on Jan. 30 from its investigation into Epstein's alleged sex trafficking network, and CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten showed how interest in the case has been intensified.
"No, it is not going away," Enten said. "Ifthe Trump administration, and Donald Trump in particular, believe that they can wish thisstory away, the American publichave a different tune to sing. What are we talking about here?Well, let's take a look at Google searches for Epstein.
"Infact, in the month of February,it is higher than it's ever been,up like a rocket, up 900 percent versusa month ago, and the top nameassociated with googling for Epstein? Well, it is Donald Trump. So the story is notgoing away. It's actuallygetting searched more and moreand more, becoming more relevantin the minds of the Americanpublic."
Congress overwhelmingly passed a law compelling the release of the Epstein files, which the DOJ has belatedly and incompletely done, and Enten said the evidence has hurt the president politically.
"Yeah, this is bad politicalnews for President Trump," Enten said. "Youknow, yesterday we spoke aboutthe fact that Donald Trump'soverall approval rating, his netapproval rating, was at a recordlow for term number two. What isthe worst issue for Donald Trumpof any of the major issues? Lookat this, we've got them all up onthe screen: immigration, foreignpolicy, the economy, trade, tariffs and then all the waydown the bottom is the Epsteincase. Look, he's underwater onimmigration, foreign policy, theeconomy and tariffs, all between minus-16 and minus-25 points. The Epsteincase though is on anotherplanet – look at this, minus-39 points. He's 39 points underwater, basically a split between 30 percentapprove and 70 percent disapprove."
"The Epstein case is not the story the Trump administration and Trump in particular and Republicans at large want in thenews because it is a bigpolitical loser for him, andthese numbers have remained veryconsistent," Enten added. "No matter which pollyou look at, he's about 40points underwater on the Epsteincase, by far his worst issue, andhe's not actually good on therest of them."
Not even Republicans like the way the president has handled the Epstein case, although they're more forgiving than other demographics.
"If it's absolutelyterrible among the center of theelectorate, among Republicans, look at this, GOP approve of Trump on immigration, the economyforeign policy, trade/tariffs, allof them basically between 77 and85, but look at the Epstein case," Enten said. "Just 55 percent of Republicans approveof Trump on the Epstein case. Itis something that divides Republicans and is somethingthat the overall electoratereally doesn't like. I mean, theylove him on almost everything else, but Epstein, not so much."
