Trump finally admits he didn't tape his talks with Comey

President Donald Trump on Thursday finally admitted that he didn't make any recordings of conversations he had with former FBI Director James Comey.

In a carefully worded tweet, Trump wrote that he couldn't say for sure whether or not someone had taped his conversations with Comey -- but he definitively said that he himself did not do so.

"With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea whether there are 'tapes' or recordings of my conversations with James Comey," Trump said. "But I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings."

Speculation about whether Trump had recorded his conversations with Comey began on May 12, when the president sent out a tweet warning Comey that "tapes" of their conversations might leak out if he started talking to the media about his experience as FBI director under the Trump administration.

"James Comey better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" Trump wrote, just days after he fired Comey.

Since that time, the White House has refused to either confirm or deny the existence of any recordings between the two men. Now, more than a month after he made mention of such recordings in an attempt to intimidate Comey, Trump has acknowledged that he does not have them.
