Trump replaces Reince Priebus through Twitter -- and names DHS chief Kelly as chief of staff

President Donald Trump on Friday afternoon announced that he was replacing White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.

In a late Friday tweet, Trump announced that Gen. John Kelly, who currently serves as head of the Department of Homeland Security, will now serve as the White House's chief of staff.

"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff," the president wrote. "He is a Great American and a Great Leader. John has also done a spectacular job at Homeland Security. He has been a true star of my Administration."

In a subsequent tweet, Trump thanked Priebus for his service to his administration.

"I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and dedication to his country," he wrote. "We accomplished a lot together and I am proud of him!"

Rumors of Priebus' firing have been swirling in recent days, as new White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci openly feuded with him in just his first week on the job.

"Reince is a fucking paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac," Scaramucci told the New Yorker's Ryan Lizza earlier this week.

A source tells CNN's Jim Sciutto that Priebus offered his resignation to Trump on Thursday.
