Democrats can use Trump's own words to blow up the GOP's 2022 campaign: Dem strategist
Democrats have a unique opportunity to use Donald Trump's own words to depress GOP turnout, according to the strategist who successfully managed Barack Obama's 2008 campaign.
MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace on Thursday interviewed David Plouffe about November's gubernatorial race in Virginia, which is widely viewed as a bell-weather for the 2022 midterm elections.
"The first major election to take place during the Biden presidency is now just a few weeks away. The Virginia governor's race pits a former Democratic governor against a Republican candidate, one Glenn Youngkin, who finds himself with a tough needle to thread in a state that President Joe Biden won by ten points," Wallace noted.
The host played a clip of Youngkin supporters pledging allegiance to a flag that flew on January 6th at a Wednesday rally with Steve Bannon.
"The event happened hours after the ex-president released a statement saying his supporters should stay home in 2022 and 2024 if his bogus election fraud claims aren't 'solved,'" she noted.
Plouffe told Wallace he expects a tight race.
"And I do think Trump's comments, Nicolle — we saw in Georgia. I mean, he's out there saying 'Don't bother to vote unless, basically, I'm returned to office.' And so I think Democrats, outside groups — and I don't think this is just the case in Virginia, all through next year — have to weaponize that," he advised.
"You have to put that content in front of irregular Republican voters and say 'Your master said don't vote and Joe Biden is still president.' It did hurt him in Georgia," he said, referring to the two January runoff elections that gave Democrats control of the U.S. Senate.
"I think it can hurt in Virginia," he added.
