Trump 'holding Republican party hostage' says defeated GOP congressman

President Donald Trump is "holding the Republican party hostage," said former congressman Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC).

Sanford, who gave up his seat in Congress before the midterms, joined CNN's Van Jones on a panel of former Republican officials who either quit or were defeated in the 2018 midterms.

Asked how he makes sense of Trumpism, Sanford said: "I don't make sense of Donald Trump's rhetoric, which is why I am where I am."

"I disagree with much of his rhetoric, I disagree with much of his tone," Sanford said. "And on both fronts, it's harmful to a lot of American themes, and it's certainly harmful to the Republican party. I think in that regard the Republican party has been held hostage."
