Trump's big win in Iowa reminds conservative of 'Groundhog Day'

Donald Trump's primary win in Iowa reminds a conservative commentator of the movie "Groundhog Day."

The state's first-in-the-nation caucus was called for Trump before many Iowans had a chance to vote, and the speed and decisiveness of his win shows the former president will almost certainly waltz to the Republican nomination despite two impeachments, four indictments on 91 felony charges and being found liable for fraud and sexual abuse, wrote The Daily Beast columnist Matt Lewis.

"I’m still holding out a glimmer of hope that somehow the Republican Party will find a way to prevent a man who has been indicted four times and who tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power from once again becoming the nominee of the Party of Lincoln," Lewis wrote. "The optimist in me believes there is still a chance. But the analyst in me is growing more cynical by the day."

Trump's win in Iowa was never really in doubt, based on polling, and Lewis said the GOP primary process will be a waste of time that will resemble Bill Murray's sisyphean existence after waking up to watch Punxsutawney Phil do his thing.

"This frigid Iowa night has me contemplating the cold hard facts about the future of the Republican Party," Lewis wrote. "Those of us who keep hoping something will happen to break Trump’s spell in the GOP feel like we are reliving the same day over and over."

"So to paraphrase Groundhog Day, I’ll give you a political prediction: It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be gray, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of Trump’s life," he added.
