A conservative panelist on "CNN This Morning" cautioned President Donald Trump against asking Americans to continue making sacrifices for his war in Iran.
The 79-year-old president declared on social media that he has "all the time in the world" and told reporters "don't rush me" to end the war, which is about to pass the eight-week mark, and The Daily Signal's Rob Bluey warned that voters may not have much more appetite for the conflict and its consequences.
"I do think that thispresident is somebody who, as weknow from past experiences, doesnot like to be rushed, likes todo things on his terms and wantsto get the best deal for the United States of America," Bluey said. "At thesame time, as you sawfrom that polling, 30 percent of Republicans are not approving ofthe president's handling of thesituation there in Iran, and Ithink that that's a number thatthe president needs to pay close attention to, particularly whenhe wants to turn out the base tomake sure that they vote in themidterm election this year."
"So the clock is ticking," Bluey added, "and theone thing that's on thepresident's mind, I'm sure, iswhether or not he can wrap upthis in time to make sure thathe's focused on the issues that Americans care about, andlargely, those are heredomestically at home."
New polling from Fox News shows 48 percent of Republicans, 72 percent of independents and 69 percent of Democrats say rising gas prices are a major issue, and New York Times podcaster Lulu Garcia-Navarro said the president's "don't rush me" message is likely to fall flat.
"Another winning messagefrom the president – not," Garcia-Navarro said. "It's really something that, obviously, Americans are feelingso much financial pressure, notjust from gas prices, but fromso many different areas, and so the president saying, 'I've got allthe time in the world,' is franklya little bit ridiculous. Theproblem here is, is that if itwas up to President Trump, thiswould be wrapped up, right? Hedoesn't want this to go on.It's not helping him, it's not helping the globaleconomy, so if he could wave amagic wand, I am absolutely surethat he would want to end this, and I know that the Iraniansthink the same because the Iranians have a vote in this."
"This is what happens when youstart a war," she added. "You go tounexpected places, and thepeople on the other side of thatwar also get to decide how longthings last, and right now, whatyou have on the Iranian side isa bit of chaos because youdon't really know theleadership that is in control. The Americans clearly don't knowwho they're negotiating with, and exactly if there's consensusthere on the other side. So thisis going to take a long time, and I think Americans should betold that it's not just up to President Trump, that this issomething that they should justunderstand. They're going to bein for the long haul, right?"
