'A dumb person can be dangerous': Trump buried by GOPers who say he's a threat

Donald Trump may be stupid, but he's not so dumb that he can't still cause damage if elected president, according to some conservatives responding to claims by a Republican governor.

New Hampshire governor Chris Sununu reportedly said in a recent interview that, "Trump is too dumb to be a threat to democracy." He reportedly added, "I want everyone to relax. It’s all going to work out.” He purportedly said we survived Civil War, McCarthyism, 1968, 9/11 and even Jan. 6. “Asshole leaders come and go, but our system stands strong," he added..

Some conservatives took the claim to heart, and lashed out against the governor.

Former Republican Party chairman Michael Steele had this to say:

"The danger here lies in the sentiment that we should 'relax'. At those critical times Gov. Sununu refers to, the last thing citizens did was relax," Steele wrote. "A dumb person can be dangerous too. Jan 6? Our institutions are not strong because Trump weakened them. 'Meh' is not an option."

Jeff Timmer, a former Michigan Republican Party executive director and outspoken Trump critic, had a similar thought.

"Trump is galactically stupid. An extinction-level moron," Timmer said. "But he's always been. Nothing has changed, and Sununu's dismissal is dumber than a sack of Trumps."

Conservative writer Bill Kristol also chimed in.

"I think—I’m not sure!—Sununu’s too smart to believe something so dumb. So either he’s dumber than I thought, or this is just avoiding responsibility. And it’s bad," he said Friday. "It creates a permission structure for Sununu-type Republicans to vote straight GOP ticket—including Trump—in 2024."

Though her political labels aren't publicly available, it's also important to note democracy expert Rachel Kleinfeld's reply. She asked Sununu to listen to conservative military leaders.

"He should hear these conservative military leaders' concern - and be more serious about the important role he can play in making America strong again," Kleinfeld said on Friday.
