'We only lost one': Trump's lawyers defend poor performance during impeachment trial

Former President Donald Trump was reportedly "borderline screaming" at the television during the presentation by his lawyers Tuesday. Legal experts argued that it was among the worst they'd ever seen. Even Republican senators agreed it was a terrible opener.

But according to Trump's own lawyers, it could have gone much worse. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal's Rebecca Ballhaus after the trial, Bruce Castor said that he didn't mean to compliment the Democrats for their opener.

"I didn't mean to say that the House case was more effective," Castor told the Journal. He explained that he meant to say that their opener had a broader focus that made it more effective than he expected. He said that the move "good strategic thinking on their part."

When asked about losing the attempt to get rid of the case, Castor explained that it wasn't that big of a deal.

"We only lost one...so I believe we had a good day," he told the Journal. Ballhaus noted that Castor said he wasn't planning on speaking Tuesday, but changed things when he saw the House case. "I wanted to pull the senators back."
