While speaking to a rally crowd in Sioux City, Iowa, Donald Trump complained about his legal challenges, including how much it has allegedly broken his bank.
According to the ex-president, he has $100 million in attorneys' bills. While it's certain that Trump owes an ample sum in legal fees, such a hefty amount would mean that all of his lawyers were making more than $10 million each. What might be true, however, is that from start to finish, Trump and those who are linked to him in several of the lawsuits have cost him nearly $37 million, the Associated Press reported last week.
The spending became public after the Oct. 15, Federal Elections Commission reports were released online.
It showed, among other things, "more than 60 law firms and individual attorneys since January 2022," said the AP. "That amounts to more than half of the PAC’s total expenditures, according to an Associated Press analysis of campaign finance filings, and represents a staggering sum compared to other political organizations."
Meanwhile, the first half of 2023 showed Save America spent over $20 million more in legal-related costs than any other political campaign committee that filed disclosures to the FEC.
The AP said that equals "more than the Republican National Committee, Democratic National Committee and National Republican Senatorial Committee spent during that period combined."
Trump famously causes problems for his lawyers, leading legal commentators to mock the acronym "MAGA" as standing for "Making Attorneys Get Attorneys."
Trump has also spent the past several years fundraising off of his ongoing legal problems. His campaign sends out several emails and text messages to supporters daily. In a single day, after his Georgia booking, he raised $7.1 million, his campaign said.
