Trump is 'literally treating the presidency like a part-time job': MSNBC host

President Donald Trump was once known for working long hours, but apparently, those days are over.

Over the weekend, Axios released leaked internal schedules showing that not only do Americans not have any record of what the president is doing, but the hours he's clocking are also few and far between. The schedules reveal the president spends 60 percent of his time in "executive time," which is code for nothing is scheduled.

It's been clear that Trump tweets during those hours and tends to tweet about what is appearing on television at that moment. So, analysts have deduced that he's likely watching what he's responding to on Twitter.

MSNBC's Ari Melber showed the average schedules of the last two presidents before Trump. George W. Bush came into the office just before 7 a.m. every morning and left the office at 6 p.m. Barack Obama came in around 9 a.m. and made sure to be at dinner with his family by 7 p.m. Both men spent the evening doing their "executive time," and Obama was notorious for writing memos and reviewing documents as late as 3 a.m.

Trump comes into the Oval Office around 11 a.m. and works an average of six hours. There are some days where the president spent the majority of his day in "executive time."

"Critics say this you were to discount even part of the executive time, that would leave Trump literally treating the presidency as a part-time, 20-hour-a-week job. Trump aides push back on all they insist he does a range of meeting, events and calls, that e-time is part of the more creative environment he needs to flourish, and that as an unstructured leader he is also, 'the most productive president in modern history,'" Melber said.

Vox host Liz Plank noted she's met Uber drivers who work more hours and have less flexibility.

She held up a page of the schedule showing Nov. 7, the day after the 2018 election. It showed the president spent 30 minutes in a meeting with his chief of staff. The remainder of the day was "executive time."

"I mean, in his defense, it's hump day. Wednesdays can be difficult," she said. " Yeah, two-thirds of his time is basically unaccounted for. We do not know what the president is doing 60 percent of the time. And, you know -- it's easy to chalk that up to being lazy, but it's also the secrecy. It's kind of strange that your own staff doesn't know what you're doing. That is not the standard.
