Trump's declining 'mental capacity' is now his greatest weakness: GOP strategist

Donald Trump's repeated gaffes and slurring during his speeches and public appearances has opened the door for former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to make inroads into cutting into his support as the two battle for the GOP's 2024 presidential nomination, and one GOP strategist claims his declining mental capacity is fair game.

In a column for MSNBC, campaign strategist Susan Del Percio pointed out that the former president has only himself to blame for making his decline front and center as the primary season ramps up and that Haley is doing a good job of raising the alarm that the former president is not up to the job of being president again.

As Del Percio explained, Trump is obviously not the person he was during his 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns and he now appears "haggard" as he makes his third bid for the presidency.

Pointing to Trump's mistaking Haley for former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) in a recent speech which raised alarms about the former president's declining state of mind, Del Percio wrote that Haley should keep up her attacks, while adding, "Trump is not going to like that. These clearly get under his skin, to the extent that he has started bragging about 'acing' a cognitive test at campaign stops. This feels a bit like a toddler showing their parents they can tie their own shoes."

She added, "She’s been pushing for him [Trump] to 'prove' his fitness publicly in a debate, and that’s an argument that benefits all voters. Americans deserve to see Trump — and Haley and Biden — enter this arena. Feeling confident that your candidate has the endurance and mental agility to perform his duties is literally the least we can ask."
