Famous ‘Cats’ actress breaks down why Trump’s damaged soul resulted in him needing her music to calm down
Broadway star Betty Buckley was asked on Saturday about possibly preventing global nuclear war on CNN on Saturday after a disturbing new report on the chaotic Trump administration.
Former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham wrote in her new book I'll Take Your Questions Now about the efforts to calm down her former boss.
"At one point, she writes, Mr. Trump's handlers designated an unnamed White House official known as the 'Music Man' to play him his favorite show tunes, including 'Memory' from 'Cats,' to pull him from the brink of rage," according to an account in The New York Times.
For analysis, CNN's Jim Acosta interviewed Betty Buckley, who won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Grizabella in the original Broadway production of Cats.
Buckley said "when this book came out and I understood that they were literally using the song to calm him down in his fits of rage, somehow, it all made sense to me."
"I was like, oh, man. you know, the guy is so wounded, his soul is so damaged and I feel that on some level this beautiful lyric by Trevor Nunn and the music by Andrew Lloyd Webber resonates with what remains of the window into whatever soul he might actually have," she explained.
"You know, he has this insatiable need to be loved because daddy just didn't, you know and neither did mommy so it would seem," she continued. "And so he's really mad at the world about that."
"But Grizabella is a character that is about longing and the need to be touched and the need to connect. And so I guess underneath it all, that's what's happening here," Buckley said.
