Legal expert says Trump 'certainly' just welcomed a new defamation suit at Georgia rally

Donald Trump recently posted a bond for more than $90 million in connection with a civil suit in which he was found liable for defaming columnist E. Jean Carroll, who a jury found was sexually assaulted by the former president in the 1990s. At a rally on Saturday, he opened himself up to more litigation on that same front, according to a legal expert.

Former federal prosecutor Shan Wu appeared on CNN Newsroom Live, where the host played a video of Trump speaking at a rally just minutes earlier. At the rally, Trump raised the issue of the massive bond.

"91 million based on false accusations made about me by a woman that I knew nothing about, didn't know," Trump said. "Never heard of. I know nothing about her."

He continued:

"She wrote a book, she said things and I denied it. I said it's so crazy, it's false I get sued for defamation."

On CNN, the host asked Wu, "Does this open him up to more legal issues?"

"Yeah. He is the gift that keeps on giving to E. Jean Carroll and her attorneys," Wu said in response. "I mean, that's basically the whole kit and caboodle all over again. He continues to say it's false. He says it's made up and that certainly opens him up to that. I mean, it's a legal strategic decision if they want to do another defamation suit. But on the face of it, even though he doesn't name her, it's obvious. I mean, incredibly obvious. That's the amount of money, and those are the allegations. So it seems clear he's continuing to claim that's false."

Pressed on whether Carroll and her legal team could bring a new case, Wu said, "I think so, yeah. I mean, that's up to them. They're experts on it, but based just on listening to what he is saying, he is again, saying that her allegations are crazy, that they're false, and he doesn't even know her."
