Trump: New York will lose 'trillions and trillions' if you convict me
May 30, 2024
Former President Donald Trump on Thursday made another prediction of economic doom for New York City should jurors convict him of falsifying business records to cover up hush-money payments to an adult film star.
Speaking outside of a courthouse in Manhattan, the former president once again railed at his trial and argued that businessmen would flee the city for fear of being prosecuted for similar payouts to mistresses.
"We were treated very, very badly!" Trump complained. "And the outside world is watching and the outside world is just not going to bring their business to New York! And that's going to cost the city and the state trillions and trillions of dollars! Businesses are leaving and people are fleeing!"

In reality, statistics published by the United States Chamber of Commerce show that new business applications in New York rose by 8.1 percent between December 2023 compared to December 2022, which does not indicate that entrepreneurs are avoiding the state out of fear of going to jail for hush money-related business record falsifications.
In addition to his hush-money trial, Trump has also been criminally charged with obstructing government efforts to retrieve top-secret government documents from his Mar-a-Lago resort and with conspiring to defraud the United States with his attempt to illegally remain in power after losing the 2020 presidential election.
