Donald Trump's war with Gov. Gavin Newsom is blowing up in his face as California's governor is taking all the president can throw at him and throwing it right back in his face.
According to an analysis by the New Republic's Greg Sargent, the president's social media war on Newsom, which has been unrelenting, shows that the Trump has a major weakness when someone actually pushes back.
"All of this is supposed to seem fearsome and strong, and the dispatching of the military is unquestionably a serious abuse of power that must be strenuously resisted," Sargent wrote. "But it’s also worth seeing it as a display of a certain form of political weakness."
He continued, "The buffoonery of Trump’s claims about the need for the Guard and his wildly uncontrollable rage at Newsom — combined with new revelations about the genesis of this crisis — point to a real vulnerability that sits at the core of this whole spectacle."

According to Sargent, the more Trump snarls at Newsom – while making "absurd" claims about events on the ground – the more he loses with the public.
"Trump is raging at Newsom – and demanding our applause for putting down this 'rebellion" – not because he’s fearsome and strong, but because his watch-me-play-fascist-on-TV routine is self-evident overkill, voters suspect the military is not needed here, and it’s all making him appear simultaneously tyrannical and incompetent," he suggested, before advising, "Democrats: Proceed accordingly."
