Trump cites Diamond and Silk to justify clemency for corrupt former Detroit mayor

President Donald Trump granted a last-minute clemency to corrupt former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick -- and he justified it in part by citing support from two diehard Trump supporters.

As flagged by WJX reporter Mike Hellgren, Trump's announcement of clemency for Kilpatrick noted that the former mayor was "strongly supported by prominent members of the Detroit community" including Trump-backing social media duo Diamond and Silk.

Trump also listed prosperity gospel minister Paula White as someone who supported clemency for Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick in 2013 was convicted on 24 felony charges, including mail fraud, wire fraud, and racketeering. Prosecutors at the time claimed that Kilpatrick's corruption "exacerbated the crisis" that led to Detroit's bankruptcy.

Trump, however, noted that Kilpatrick "has taught public speaking classes and has led Bible Study groups with his fellow inmates" during his seven years in prison.
