President Donald Trump's support among male voters is plummeting, and CNN's Harry Enten warned the Republican congressional majority it may not survive the fall.
The 79-year-old president rode a wave of support from that half of the electorate to the White House in 2024, but many of them have already turned on his second term, and that growing unpopularity could cut into his party's chances of maintaining control of the House and Senate.
"Look, thebottom line is this," Enten said. "Donald Trump and Republicans wonin 2024 because of support frommale voters. The only way theycan win, given the gender gap inthis country, is support frommale voters, and male voters areabandoning Donald Trump.
"Take alook here, this gives the gameaway, okay? Trump's standingwith men in November of 2024,he beat Kamala Harris, amongthem, by 13 points.Look at where he is now on hisnet approval rating – down hegoes. It's a 20-point shiftaway from Donald Trump. He isnow seven points underwater atthis particular point among men.I think it is very difficult forRepublicans to do well in thismidterm cycle if Donald Trumpis underwater with men."
The president is doing even worse with younger men, Enten said.
"There was a massive shift to Donald Trump from 2020 to 2024among young men, and look righthere – whoa, whoa, yikes, yikes, yikes, yikes," Enten said. "Men under the ageof 25 on Trump. He won them in2024 by five points, look wherehe is now. The net approvalrating way down there. Down wego to minus-19 points. That's nearly, what is that, nearly a 25-pointswitcheroo against the presidentof the United States when itcomes to men under the age of45? Those men that had switchedtheir allegiances over to the Republican Party are seeing whatthe president is doing, theydon't like what the presidentis doing, and they have verymuch soured on the president ofthe United States."
One issue has been dragging Trump down since he returned to office, according to poll after poll.
"There are a lot ofissues that have caused them tosour on President Trump, but one,in particular, we've spokenabout it over and over and overagain," Enten said. "It's the cost of living, it's inflation. Look at this: Okay, men on Trump and the costof living in October of 2024.Look at this, Trump was trustedmore than Kamala Harris by 10points on this issue. Now we'vegot a 40-point switcheroo in theother direction. Look at this:His net approval rating on thecost of living among men isunderwater by 30 percentagepoints.
"There isno way on God's green earth thatthe Republican Party can hold onto the House of Representativesif this number holds," he added. "Whenyou're 30 points underwater withthe gender, that of course, putsyou over the top in the election,on the cost of living, thenumber one issue, that means seeyou later [to] that Republican House majority and maybe that Senatemajority, as well."
