Trump allies crank up racist dog whistles against Nikki Haley
December 21, 2023
As polls show former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley climbing in New Hampshire, allies of former President Donald Trump have increasingly begun referring to her by her given name, Nimarata, to emphasize her Indian heritage.
According to Axios, there have been multiple efforts by Trump allies to highlight Haley's birth name in an apparent racist dog whistle aimed at blunting whatever momentum she has heading into the New Hampshire primary.
Among the attacks are Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who himself is of Indian descent, referring to Haley as "lying Nimarata Randhawa."
At a Turning Point USA conference earlier this month, meanwhile, Haley was listed as "Nimarata Nikki Randhawa Haley" on a ballot to indicate preference for whom attendees would like to see Trump pick as his vice president.

As Axios notes, the emphasis on Haley's given name "echoed Trump's frequent, derisive mentions of former President Barack Obama's middle name — Hussein — even though Trump never ran against Obama."
Trump himself has been making headlines for racist dog whistles in recent weeks, including his comments that immigrants are "poisoning the blood" of the country, which is a phrase found to describe the impact of Jews in Adolf Hitler's autobiography.
