Donald Trump and his administration really stepped in it when it comes to their recent handling of a MAGA conspiracy theory, a conservative strategist said.
Conservative anti-Trump activist Rick Wilson, who co-founded the Lincoln Project and hosts the group's podcast, wrote Friday about the explosion of the Jeffrey Epstein conspiracy theory. As Wilson calls it, "the Holy Grail of MAGA and Q-addled rage, the long-promised Rosetta Stone that would finally expose the deep state, the Clintons, Tom Hanks, your local kindergarten teacher, and maybe even the ghost of Antonin Scalia."
When Trump and his attorney general, Pam Bondi, announced that there was no Epstein client list, the was a "meltdown," Wilson said.
"This wasn’t just a betrayal. This was heresy. This was J.D. Vance getting to the Vatican and realizing the Pope is playing beer pong with Beelzebub and Hunter Biden. MAGAworld didn’t just expect the Epstein Revelations would destroy every Democrat, journalist, and celebrity in their pantheon of petty hatreds: they demanded it, had built their identity around it. And now? Trump torched the stage" and told them to move on, according to the ex-GOP strategist. "And oh, they’re moving on all right…right into a frothing civil war with each other."
Wilson said Bondi's role stood out.
"The best part of a cult unraveling is the backbiting. MAGA world didn’t even pause at first to blame the Deep State™. No, they went straight for the nearest traitor they could find: Pam Bondi," Wilson wrote. "Posobiec called her a liar. Loomer demanded her resignation. Fox News hosts started asking the kinds of questions they usually reserve for Hillary Clinton’s liver enzyme panels. Jesse Watters, with the same gravitas he brings to rating women’s Instagram bios, declared the whole thing 'reeking.'"
According to the activist, Trump offered "no apology. No explanation. Just more hot air and a wet fart of misdirection. Because that’s what he does: breaks the toys and walks away like a toddler with diplomatic immunity."
"But MAGA’s mad. Not entirely because they didn’t get what they wanted, but also because Trump made them look stupid. And you can lead a cult to Kool-Aid, but you can’t tell them the flavor was just LaCroix," he added.
