On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said that Democrats are "giving up" on their quest to get his tax returns.
The "House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal has formally requested President Donald Trump's tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service," according to CNN.
While talking to reporters Trump said, Democrats "are giving up" because they're only asking for six years of tax returns instead of ten.
"Mr. President, the chairman of the Democratic House Ways and Means Committee moments ago asked the IRS for six years of your tax returns," said one reporter in the Oval Office Wednesday.
"Is that all?" Trump asked. "Usually it's ten. So I guess they're giving up. We're under audit, despite what people said and working that as -- I'm always under audit it seems, but I've been under audit for many years because the numbers are big and I guess when you have a name, you are audited but until such time as I'm not under audit I would not be inclined to do that. Thank you. Thank you all very much. Appreciate it."
Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen told Congress under oath that Trump is not under audit.
Congress didn't ask Trump to release the taxes, they asked the IRS, using a 100-year-old law that would give them access to the information. Trump also can't claim "executive privilege" on the taxes, as he's attempted to do with other requested information.
