Trump says he is 'very close' to reviving DACA program he recently killed

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he was making a deal with Congressional leaders that would extend protections for so-called Dreamers.

"You have 800,000 young people brought here no fault of their own," he said. "So we are working on a plan... but we are going to get massive border security as part of that."

"I think we are very close, but we have to get massive border security."

Trump said that House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) were both "on board" with the deal.

"Ninety-two percent of the people agree on DACA, but what we want is we want very, very powerful border security, okay," he said.

The Trump administration announced its decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program last week. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the program, which was enacted by an executive order under President Barack Obama, was under legal threat from conservative states and would not hold up in court.

But the decision to rescind the program provided Congress with a six-month window to come up with a legislative fix.
