Trump 'plays his New York criminal trial off his Florida docs case' by seeking new delay

Donald Trump on Saturday asked Judge Cannon to delay certain deadlines in his classified documents case, citing the criminal hush money trial he is facing.

Trump has received numerous delays in the classified documents case, in which the former president stands accused of stashing away documents from the White House at his Mar-a-Lago golf club. In this instance, he's using his upcoming criminal case in New York to seek a delay on disclosure deadlines to reveal information to Special Counsel Jack Smith.

Chris “Law Dork” Geidner is among those flagging the filing on social media.

"Breaking: Trump asks Cannon to put deadlines in his Florida federal documents criminal case on hold until three weeks after his New York hush money criminal trial ends because he was unsuccessful at stopping the NY case from going forward," he wrote.

Political and legal commentator Allison Gill, better known as "Mueller, She Wrote," also flagged the filing on X, the platform that's formerly known as Twitter.

"Trump is asking Judge Cannon to delay his May 9 due date for his rule 16 expert disclosures and his CIPA section 5 notice because he has this whole other criminal trial in New York he has to attend," she wrote Saturday. "Cannon just recently set this deadline knowing about the NY trial."

Lawfare legal analyst Anna Bower said, "Trump moves to delay May 9 deadline."

"Judge Cannon set for the filing of his CIPA Section 5 notice in the classified docs case," she wrote Saturday. "Trump says a delay is necessary bc he’ll be on trial in NY starting Monday. He wants the deadline moved to 3 weeks after conclusion of the NY trial."

The Guardian's Hugo Lowell added, "Trump again plays his New York criminal trial off his Florida classified docs case — asks Judge Cannon to delay the deadline for him to tell Special Counsel what classified info he intends to use at trial until three weeks after the New York trial."
