'Trump seems to be stuck' and debate gambit 'shows how desperate he is': reporter

Puck News senior political correspondent Tara Palmeri on Friday said that former President Donald Trump's sudden flip-flop on debating Vice President Kamala Harris on ABC showed that he's "desperate" for an event to turn around his presidential campaign.

Appearing on CNN Friday, Palmeri argued that Trump would not have changed his mind on debating Harris on ABC if he felt confident at the moment that he was heading toward victory.

"But he's even suggested more dates, which shows how desperate he is to get Kamala Harris into a position where he thinks she'll be uncomfortable," she said. "This is obviously a deeply seated belief that he has that she can't handle unprompted interactions."

Host Sara Sidner then asked Palmeri about her reporting that Trump is considering bringing former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway back to help with his campaign.

While Palmeri confirmed that Conway may be coming back to help Trump hone his attacks on Harris, it's not indicative of a broader overhaul of the campaign.

"It's been a very rocky launch, they aren't really quite recalibrating," she said. "Trump seems to be stuck with the, you know, he's stuck on the fact that he's not running against Joe Biden anymore, and he realizes he has a very different candidate and a new type of person to take on, and he doesn't feel as comfortable with the direction his prior team has been going in. They've been focused on Joe Biden. And he has a bit of nostalgia and he recalls the day in 2016 when Kellyanne Conway... was essentially able to help him go after Hillary Clinton."
