Trump lawyers ask New York judge to delay felony sentencing until after the election

Donald Trump's attorneys have asked for a Manhattan judge to delay his sentencing until after the November election.

Attorneys for the former president and current Republican nominee wrote a letter to the court dated Wednesday pointing out that the Sept. 18 sentencing date was scheduled to take place after the start of early voting, and they argued that Trump did not have time to consider appeals options in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's immunity ruling, reported Politico.

Trump was convicted in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

The Supreme Court ruled in the federal election interference case that Trump should be immune from criminal charges related to his official acts as president, and New York judge Juan Merchan is expected to rule soon on whether his conviction in the hush money case should be tossed on in light of that.

Merchan already paused sentencing, which had been scheduled for July 11, so he could consider whether the Supreme Court ruling would impact Trump's conviction that came a little more than month prior.
