Trump supporters rage at 'swamp rat' GOP senator even after he bends the knee

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), one of many Republican senators who has been at least skeptical of former President Donald Trump's third White House bid, bent the knee on Wednesday and endorsed the former president.

"Congratulations to Donald Trump on his resounding victory in the Texas Republican primary!" Cornyn wrote on Twitter. "Looking forward to continuing to work with him to elect fellow conservatives up and down the ballot in 2024."

However, the Texas senator's warm words for the ex-president were not enough to satisfy many Trump supporters, who replied to accuse him of a wide array of purported offenses.

"John 'Ukraine' Cornyn is not a conservative," wrote Trump supporter Joseph Pino. "He’s never conserved anything, except the Ukraine money laundering scheme."

"Tick tock!" wrote a self-identified Texas voter. "2 years and you’re outta there!"

Another Trump supporter simply deemed Cornyn a "swamp rat," while another told him to move to California.

While Cornyn was a loyal foot soldier during Trump's presidency, he flatly said as recently as last year that he did not believe the former president had any shot at retaking the White House this year.

"I don’t think President Trump understands that when you run in a general election, you have to appeal to voters beyond your base," Cornyn said at the time. "There’s no question that President Trump has some enthusiastic supporters as part of his base. That works well for him in a Republican primary, but not well when you need to expand your appeal in a general election."

Cornyn has also drawn fire from many of the MAGA faithful not only for championing military aid to Ukraine, but also for getting behind the recent bipartisan immigration deal that fell apart after Trump came out against it.
