Trump takes credit for Emmanuel Macron pulling out of climate agreement -- except he has done nothing of the sort

In yet another bizarre tweet, President Donald Trump seemed confused about the recent decision by French President Emmanuel Macron over fuel taxes.

"I am glad that my friend @EmmanuelMacron and the protestors in Paris have agreed with the conclusion I reached two years ago. The Paris Agreement is fatally flawed because it raises the price of energy for responsible countries while whitewashing some of the worst polluters in the world. I want clean air and clean water and have been making great strides in improving America’s environment. But American taxpayers – and American workers – shouldn’t pay to clean up others countries’ pollution," Trump tweeted.

France's prime minister paused plans to increase fuel taxes for six months after massive protests erupted. Trump has decided that this meant Macron is pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord, which isn't accurate.

"According to government officials, this goal was behind the plan to increase petrol prices by four euro cents a litre from January," The Guardian explained. This, they said, was one of several steps towards France’s commitment to cut carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and to ban sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040."

Macron has taken on the cause, saying that he wants to make the Earth great again. He also said that he would oppose any trade deals between the European Union and Mercosur if Brazil’s right-wing president withdraws from the agreement.
