Trump takes a victory lap as shutdown looms: ‘No matter what happens today … we won big’

President Donald Trump claimed victory -- "no matter what happens" -- as the U.S. Senate considers a new spending bill to avert a government shutdown.

The Senate passed a stopgap spending bill Wednesday, but House Republicans merged that bill with one that adds about $5.7 billion in funding for Trump's border wall -- which is not expected to pass in the Senate.

"No matter what happens today in the Senate, Republican House Members should be very proud of themselves," Trump tweeted. "They flew back to Washington from all parts of the World in order to vote for Border Security and the Wall. Not one Democrat voted yes, and we won big. I am very proud of you!"

Trump told Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) he would be proud to "own" a government shutdown, but now he's trying to pin the blame on Democrats.

"Shutdown today if Democrats do not vote for Border Security!" he tweeted.

"The Democrats, whose votes we need in the Senate, will probably vote against Border Security and the Wall even though they know it is DESPERATELY NEEDED," he tweeted. "If the Dems vote no, there will be a shutdown that will last for a very long time. People don’t want Open Borders and Crime!"

He also tweeted the 217-185 vote count that House Republicans gave to the spending bill that included wall funding.
