Canada prepares to drop the hammer on Trump's home state amid tariff threats

The Canadian government isn't taking President-elect Donald Trump's tariff threats lying down and is planning to take retaliatory measures that will hit his home state of Florida.

CTV News is reporting that the Canadian government is planning a series of retaliatory tariffs that would hit American-made orange juice, which is a major export of Florida.

And that could just be the start of retaliatory tariffs that could hit Americans' wallets in the coming months.

"Blocking exports of Canadian oil, electricity and critical minerals is another option on the table, according to one senior government source in Washington, DC," reports CTV. "Last month, Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut off energy exports from his province if Trump followed through on this threat. He later clarified that he wants to export more energy south of the border, but his comments were about standing up for Canadian workers."

Canadian Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson tells CTV that the tariffs they're crafting "will certainly be focused on looking to extract the greatest amount of pain in the United States to ensure that there is pressure put on President Trump."

Since winning the 2024 presidential election, Trump has regularly antagonized Canada, which has long been one of the United States' strongest and most reliable allies in the world. Among other things, he has floated the possibility of making Canada America's "51st state" despite the fact that such an idea is deeply unpopular with Canadian voters.
